Michigan Tribute to Victims of Dangerous Dogs

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Michigan Tribute to Victims of Dangerous Dogs will be moved to a ZOOM format that will be released on October 25, 2023, during National Pit Bull VICTIM Awareness Month. We will NOT be at the Capitol in Lansing. We plan to reschedule an event at the Capitol in Lansing at a future date to be determined.

RC4PS.org will be hosting the ZOOM Tribute and there will be a discussion with two victims whose beloved pets were killed and their experience with the legal system including their effort to change the law surrounding dangerous dogs. We will also present a Michigan legislative update and discuss the future of BSL with Colleen Lynn, founder of the comprehensive educational website DogsBite.org!

The purpose of the event is to honor and acknowledge victims of dangerous dog attacks and raise awareness about the frequency and severity of dog attacks that leave victims with physical and emotional scars. Attacks that take lives. Attacks that were completely preventable.

We want the Michigan Dangerous Animals Act 426 to be enforced. We will highlight the need for a “Truth in Pet Adoption Law”, which would require that animal shelters and rescue groups disclose a dog’s bite history or aggressive behavior in writing before adoption. It’s about informed consent, consumer protection and common sense. This law would apply to dogs of ANY breed or mix- it is not breed specific. We want to show the need for the creation of a central database for dangerous dogs to increase communication between and be accessed by animal control agencies, police departments, court systems, veterinarians and the public. Currently interagency communication is virtually non-existent, making tracking dangerous dogs that have attacked nearly impossible.

Our goal is to call legislators to act to protect our families, our pets and our livestock from dangerous dog attacks.
